NPR: André 3000 Says, “You Can Do Anything From Atlanta”

André 3000 aka André 3 Stacks aka André Benjamin (half of OutKast; ‘Stank’ you very much) is on NPR’s Microphone Check chatting with Ali Shaheed Muhammad (of A Tribe Called Quest) and Frannie Kelley. Next up for André: screening of the Jimi Hendrix biopic in which he stars. That, about his working with Aretha Franklin, about 20 years of OutKast and the Dungeon Family and Atlanta being that city of freedom (and more)… make for a great sit-down. Stream to listen above.

The Moped Gangs of London (Video)

Internet superstardom. Merchandising. Respect among pros and serious enthusiasts. Respect the riders… of mopeds! Hold your chuckles, the UK Bikelife has ’nuff respect for this special breed of Biker Boyz.

Mopeds and teenage boys have gone hand-in-hand since the 1960s. But in the last year UK BikeLife culture – where young scooter riders upload videos of themselves wheelie-ing down motorways and through industrial estates – has exploded, with the scene’s leaders picking up thousands of YouTube and Instagram followers in the process.

These British riders are beginning to receive international attention, not least from Baltimore’s notorious dirt bike club, the 12 O’Clock Boys. Although they may lack the CCs of their American counterparts, they’ve done a good job of making up for it with charisma and a dedication to the underdog of the two-wheeled world: the humble moped.

This is the UK’s version of the States’ 12 O’Clock Boys (that’s hella hardcore, if you remember our earlier post here)? Check out the VICE report on this phenomenon.

Japan’s Ninja School Girls (Video)

Awww so cute. “Ninja Schoolgirl” viral videos of students in Japan running/racing about town doing parkour stunts off buildings, walls, and walkways… and some ring sparring (kicking serious butt)… basically training to be able to chase down suckaz and kick their azzes wearing cute smiles and bedazzled fingernails.

Try explaining the result of that fight with your homies if you ever tick them off. Or… OR… you could just click play above and watch them tell VICE all about it.

BoneBreaker Jones – “Livin Proof” (Rebooth)

Okay, deep breaths. Twenty years is a long enough wait. So here goes: I have kept word of this personal project I have been working on from pretty much EVERYBODY (JayForce and my Beatz & Lyrics fam included); partly because it means so much to me but also because timing is crucial…for most everything!

This a reboot (e.g. redo, redux, reffixx mixtape… I actually call it a Rebooth) of the Group Home classic “Livin’ Proof.” Ever since this came out about 20 years ago, I have wondered what my favorite DJ Premier beats off that album would sound under verses from emcees I know and admire. Well, viola! Check out this work of love (TOTALLY FREE, of course) – The “Livin Proof” (Rebooth LP) from BoneBreaker Studios, featuring various artists over the original music by DJ Premier.

This post is for the title track, from BoneBreaker Jones. His music video for this is coming next week. Prepare your hearts and minds to partake, as the reverend would say.

Check it out. Download and pass it on if you like. I LOVE IT (but then again, I’ve got 20 years of bias built up).

(What’s crazy is… several artists on the project – including the homie SkyBlew – were barely on the planet when Group Home dropped the original plate!)

Enjoy.

Moms: The New Target Market Segment For Marijuana (Video)

“The ‘Green Crack’… That’s a real branding problem. You wanna get rid of the stigma…for moms.”
Jessica Roake

Go for the moms. U.S. industry has pursued that marketing strategy for over a century. Exhibit: ‘soap’ operas (e.g. the ‘stories’) being produced specifically to sell SOAP to housewives back in the day. The tobacco smoking industry’s advertising included moms in the targeting mix (hell, they even included ‘doctors’ in some ads). The green industry machine had to eventually get around to talking to moms in their promotions (got to calm down eff’n ’round with these damn kids haha).

[The legal cannabis industry is] searching for ways to get moms around the country to set down their wine and light up. We travel to Denver with Jessica Roake, a mother of two from the suburbs of Washington, DC, for a mom-friendly cannabis tour. She gets blazed beyond belief in the name of market research.

Ah, VICE. This is that good good… article. Watch above.

Actor Wendell Pierce On The White Roots Of Violence In America On ‘Real Time With Bill Maher’ (Video)

There’s a good amount of good watching on the tube nowadays. No excuse to waste your brain cells on trash TV (you know what that is, and if you watch it no judgements). Bill Maher’s ‘Real Time’ = Good Watching. You remember actor Wendell Pierce from the HBO original series ‘Treme’ and back in the day on ‘The Wire.’ Well, the proud Louisiana-bred brother was on Bill’s show doing us proud; speaking truth to light on a myriad of issues. Watch the clip above and the other after the jump if you missed when he appeared on the show. Then check out the entire episode. Get an idea about where Blacks’ proclivity to visit violence upon each other in the streets AND in their relationships and families was really born; about White entitlement and how Blacks could historically never afford it, about racial perceptions being reality then and even now and so much more!

The Return Of The Black Death (Documentary)

In the minds of most Westerners, still, the Black Plague triggers thoughts of history lessons, or of movies about the Middle Ages. This is not a modern era illness we face. To oversimplify, the Black Death is supposed to be dead. Well, with recent mainstream reporting about a third world outbreak – and a public health scare as two victims returned to Atlanta (Georgia, USA) for treatment – the West likely experienced a mental software upgrade that re-ranked the disease much higher among the threats to health and chances of survival. However, as is oft the case for mainstream media, another shiny new story came up, and another (Ray Rice, U.S.-led airstrikes…whatever, take your pick); and Western reporters moved on to the next one…on to the next one. But not VICE. This is where VICE lives: Embedded in the hottest areas of stories too dangerous AND too low on the ‘this just in’ scale of current events for big-budget reporting outfits to care about; usually in faraway places and affecting people who are to far removed from ‘us’ to care about. THAT is why we f#ck with VICE: Because as a noble reporting institution that could do otherwise, it consistently chooses to find and stay on the stories that thinking and feeling people would indeed care about (or care about longer) if they were told and kept fully informed about them. Like this Black Death that the mainstream news (liberal and conservative leaning) thinks is ‘dead’ (e.g. a dead story). It is still VERY much alive. And not knowing and keeping up with it could still get lots and lots of us KILLED.

[I]n the fall of 2013, Beranimbo [Madagascar, Africa] had been an epicenter of a black plague outbreak that resulted in nearly 600 cases and more than 90 deaths across the country. Madagascar reports the most instances of the disease in the world. Depending on which century you’re talking about, it’s perhaps best known as the plague—a scourge generally associated with the Middle Ages, when rats, fleas, and poor hygiene resulted in the deaths of between 75 and 200 million people. The disease remains an enduring threat in third-world nations; public-health watchdogs report up to 2,000 cases a year.

VICE gives a detailed, two-part documentary report and writeup. Watch, starting with part 1 above. Follow the link to read more below; and hit the jump for part 2. Get this knowledge in you like medicine! Folks and the media think the ‘curing’ of two folks in the ATL is a triumph over what could be considered a ‘scary outbreak that happened over there.’ Nah, maaan. This thing could hit a city! Thousands to millions of people at risk. Maybe that’d make it ‘big’ enough to get outbreak coverage again but… as the VICE report adeptly put it: “[H]istory has taught us, by the time there are enough people with the plague to classify it as an “outbreak,” it’s already too late.”

J-Live – “Not Listening” (Video)

New York raised but Atlanta based emcee J-Live drops a brand new video for ‘Not Listening’ off of his latest project ‘Around The Sun.’  J-Live takes aim at the subpar rappers flooding the music industry with weak & uninspiring music. Big ups to the homie J-Live who also features a few cameos from a few of my friends in this new clip. My homie DJ Rasta Root (manager & DJ for Phife Dawg formerly of A Tribe Called Quest) sent me this video of him playing the wack rapper in the clip while the beautiful hip hop head & model Serena AZ is the fly honey making the visuals even more prettier. Word to the LYTE….Y’all need to STOP, LOOK, & LISTENNNNN to this!

Uni-V-Sol – “Sushi” featuring Nottz

Banger! R-A-W! Nottz on the beat AND on the track? Yessir. And does Uni-V-Sol deliver the gold, true belivers? Damn right. Some might say this Dynamic Duo could save real Hip-Hop. But for real, these two just proved Hip-Hop doesn’t need saving… It’s gonna be just fine because of tracks like this.

As the hook suggests, “Sushi” is raw cold bars! A song made by MCs for MCs. The song “Sushi” is my bid to be known as one of Hip-Hop’s Best MCs out today. Getting Nottz to produce the track just seemed like a natural thing to do, being he has been one of the top Hip-Hop producers for a long time. I watched an interview with Nottz saying he was an MC first and he started making beats to rap to, so I knew I really had to have him on the track. At the end of the day, “Sushi” is just about serving cats and being the illest ever. It’s really just the tip of the iceberg.

And the artwork…yoooo! Stream the “Sushi” single above. Linked below.

Well, he’s getting his ‘expensive taste’ on for the GQ series – Most Expensivest Sh!t – with this Le Burger Extravagant from Serendipity in New York.

Interestingly enough, this burger actually helps fund a good cause. And actually, 2 Chainz said the burger tasted so good his ‘life was changed.’ But still… it holds a Guinness World Record for being the World’s Most Expensive Burger. All that is… wow.
