Antonio Ricky – “Brilliance Underrated” feat. Dez (Video)

Suuuuperrr dope. Like Scarface, Freeway, AZ and Nas all rolled into one artist in here. “Brilliance Underrated” (featuring Dez)… That title is an understatement. Take note artists: When you do the work, we take note. Respect to Antonio Ricky. Looking forward to more off that “11th Hour” project you got going over there.

11th Hour is more of a mindset than just your regular rap album. This is hard drums, raw rhymes, content and soul music combined in one project. If you’re a person who puts actions behind their dreams, this album is for you.
Antonio Ricky

Shout out to the homie Khalid Salaam for putting us on to this.

Raekwon – “This Is What It Comes Too” (Video)

One word to describe my grind, son, I’m SERIOUS!

Look at the cover art for Raekwon’s forthcoming LP, “The Wild.” Looking like Kraven The Hunter, dude is definitely collecting heads AGAIN! So, ‘protect ya neck’ AGAIN… from the beats and lyrics! “This Is What It Comes Too” is too dope to simply reference as album track two. It’s the lead single off the project (available for download now with pre-order). Plenty of raw red meat. Fresh kill on the Serengeti. Raekwon’s hunt begins. Anything wack, dead that.

A7FL’s Hard-Hitting Point: Tackle Football Without Pads Could Cut The Number Of Concussions (Video)

So, American 7s Football League says take the helmet off to reduce rates of concussion and CTE in full-contact football?? Simple, elegant, old-school solution. Okay. But…Daaaayuummm! Dudes are getting LIT the F*CK up!

Saying though, didn’t we have them putting on more and more protection? As the years passed in this American pastime aka the ultimate collision sport we all love, we have paid more and more; and made the sport more and more expensive to play. Perhaps this is a way to dial all that back a notch.

Maybe we should just make ’em play flag or two hand touch?

Naaaah (haha). Hit the link for more on the safety perspective. Hit play above to see some HITTING! Hit the jump to see more highlights from A7FL.

Lord Jamar Speaks On President Trump, Kanye West Wanting “In” The White House And More (Video)

Brand Nubian’s Lord Jamar is a VladTV regular. Usually comes through provacative & entertaining interviews. Some have that crazy-enough-to-make-scary-sense feel, though, like this one. He touches on Donald Trump’s tendency to Tweet off cuff, while in his feelings… thoughts on Black celebs like Jim Brown and Kanye West meeting with Trump.

Hmmm… Kanye gets dissed as a ‘jackass’ when President Obama was in the White House AND Jay Z and Beyonce were always welcome. Yeezy might be thinking about ‘hitting back’ with visits and while The Trumps run the place?

Interesting viewpoint, Lord Jamar. Interesting…

(Talk about The ‘West’ Wing… Yeezus H. Kanye!)

Eye Candy: Abena Love (Video)

Yesssss, ma’am! Abena Love is looking like a bite-sized treat made just for me (I mean us… she’s happily married)! Modeling jeans is the objective of this video, but I get “distracted.” So, I am glad she reminds us of the selection at the end.

(I hit play again at the end to ‘review’ anyway. You know, because THICKNESS in form-fitting JEANS.)

Abena is like that kinda of sexy that is not overt. You see it, but you see her cuteness first; more so than any model I have featured before. I’d describe her as ‘girlfriend cute.’ Very lovely to look at. Check her out on Instagram, too. The best way is to look for #AbenaLove like I did (hit the link).

Africa’s Great Civilizations (Documentary Series Trailer)

It’s February. Black History Month to those who want to celebrate it as that. But since we make history every month, and we predate history, let’s go with the LOVE theme (not even waiting until the 14th *wink*).

So, on everything we LOVE, the late author & renaissance man Dr. Henry Louis Gates is at bringing us this POWERFUL docu-series on “Africa’s Great Civilizations.” Stirring, speaking truth for the ages… A must-watch when it drops Monday, February 27th on PBS. Peep the trailer above.

(And don’t let “them”… any “them” tell you YOUR history. “They” should not determine YOUR place in the universe. YOU should!)

Nike’s new shoe magically adapts to your foot.

Camp Lo – “On The Way Uptown” (‘Uptown Saturday Night’ Demo)

This is it… what? For real. WHAT! This is why I stay on the homies’ list over at BadMagics. Beyond behind the scenes, this music speaks to how dope the Camp Lo duo was before the execs greenlit the label to let us all know. See, kiddies, back in the day, dope artists put together music bundles (e.g. demos) like this and ‘shopped’ them (e.g. begged out-of-touch weirdos) to listen and help get the music out to the masses.

Then the Interwebs… then here we are.

So, this is kind of full circle, right? Camp Lo has been dope for decades, before the World Wide Web, but they started with a demo run like this. Now, we get to run the demo on the Web. Nice. Pay your respect! Long overdue, and still due.

Denzel Washington And Viola Davis On ‘Fences’ (Video)

Maaan. Denzel Washington gone have pull with the ladies until they pull the casket closed, put it in the hole, bury and top it with daisies. And even after that! The lady was hollering, “You can give it to ME,” at Denzel on stage. That’s why we can’t go nowhere nice right there, momma. Come on, we’re leaving. BWAAHAHAAA!

Watch this clip with Mr. Washington and the lovely Viola Davis talking a bit more about their work/play/love on “Fences.”

Lowriders (Trailer)

You know how folks talk about a flick being a ‘coming of age’ movie? This feels more like a ‘coming of CULTURE’ joint. Getting screamed on for ignoring your roots (that elders speak of that you know little about and have never ‘seen’), cursed for creating art from your heart, the passion and defiance of youth… wow. You get it before you ‘get it,’ right? Truth is, I know very little about “Lowriders.” But if I look at this from where I stand, standing on what I know, there is way more than a little bit of Hip-Hop’s cultural underpinnings here.

“Lowriders” is set against the vibrant backdrop of East LA’s near-spiritual car culture and follows the story of Danny, a talented young street artist caught between the lowrider world inhabited by his old-school father and ex-con brother, and the adrenaline-fueled outlet that defines his self-expression.

Watch the trailer. Watch again. This trailer hit me. Gonna be a ‘sleeper recommendation’ of mine. When it hits, remember I told you!

Billionaire ‘Shark Tank’ Investor Mark Cuban Takes A Hard Look At President Trump’s First Days (Video)

I will admit: It will be hard for me to balance the passion and political savvy it takes to show love for my country. You have to be involved with something, passionately involved, to really show that you are in LOVE with it, right? Okay, then. I love this country. I show it with passion, warts and all. I did so at the ballot box last year, and things did not go my way. I felt the Bern and got burnt. Pulled for Hillary, but got Trumped.

Bitter, sure. Beaten, no. I’m an American. Even when we take an L we don’t take defeat. So, where are we now? In the first weeks of Donald Trump’s Presidency. Lots of folks are speaking up. Passionately. And we have to talk. It just can’t all be hate and futility. That is, in part, why I had to ‘re-title’ the YouTube video above. In it, Dallas Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban says WAY more than ‘Trump set the bar low.’ There is actually some thought mixed into the rant. Take a listen.

We will not agree on everything, on that we can agree. But here is something on which we must agree: I will listen to you, and you to me. Most of all, to you who did NOT vote…I am listening.

(If we are really honest, that might be what got us to this point in history. So, let’s listen. Starting with this fiery Cuban commentary.)

Salaam Remi, Amy Winehouse’s Main Producer, Speaks On Her Artistic Influence, Dying At 27 And More (Video)

Ohhhh! Amy Winehouse’s main producer was Salaam Remi? That’s one of Nas’ go-to producers. Wonder if that is what put them in contact (e.g. both working with and trusting Remi), allowing them to grow their friendship. Or was it that those two were friends… and one introduced the other to Salaam Remi.

Salaam Remi is one of the producers who worked heavily with the late Amy Winehouse. The producer discusses meeting Amy, and how they would come together to produce jazz music. He goes on to speak about her issues with love, her sense of humor and how that affected her music. Despite producing a majority of Amy’s work, Salaam reveals he did not get a Grammy alongside the songstress. Salaam talks, Amy’s legacy after the troubled singer died at just 27 years old.

Opinion: Talladega College’s Marching Band Goes To Washington (Video)

Above: The Talladega College Marching Tornadoes march in the parade celebrating the Inauguration of the United States’ 45th President, Donald Trump. The music selection played in the clip…“Dreamin'” (appropos in a way).

Complicated. Mixed feelings. I could easily sort them out by sticking to my President Trump = Cobra Commander = Ultimate Evil algorithm… but Trump is who we got. He is The President now.

And these kids. Children. OUR children. What would they have ‘got’ from listening to me, or to the many who’d tell the Talladega College band to turn down an opportunity to perform for The President on National TV and get exposure and funding their school needs? What would they have ‘got’…? Nothing!

Now, that is no justification either… because back when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and lifelong friend Ambassador Andrew Young and eventual U.S. Rep. John Lewis, CT Vivian, Dr. Bernard LaFayette and… what did THEY ‘got’ after being booed, beaten blue and bloody? Nothing! That’s what our heroes ‘got.’

I cannot, if I am real with my realest self, declare those TC band members ‘sellouts’ or say that they were fools for playing the Inauguration. Had I the talent and opportunity in that situation, I might have done the same or sent my kids if I had any. But being an official old man in the eyes of every student who went, I could have told them about optics (Omarosa being their ‘welcome committee’ and clamoring for selfies) AND what the event looks like from a historical perspective… melancholy at best.

Think of it this way: When you picture King, Lewis, Vivian, LaFayette and pictures from poignant moments of their youth… What do you see? Courage, strength in the face of adversity, a fight worth fighting, hope for the future. But when you see TC’s band in pics with Omarosa or playing the Inauguration…

That is for YOU to decide, perhaps over the next few years.

Either way, kids, the story ain’t over. By now you are back on campus. That scholarship money, new practice space, etc. can be used to learn to EXCEL… to prepare you to ENGAGE… to follow in the footsteps of the guy many of you hoped to see (Barack Obama) and CHANGE THE WORLD. You can take what ‘the man’ gave you and use it to fuel the revolution!

After all, Nat Turner ate the scraps ‘Massa’ threw at him and read the Bible he ‘let’ him have, kept up his strength and fueled his faith, THEN LED THE REVOLT!
