ESPYs Special Moment: Sports Anchor Stuart Scott Accepts The 2014 Jimmy V Award And A Hug From His Baby Girl (Video)

I’m not special. I just listened to what the man said.
Stuart Scott

The man, to whom ESPN anchor Stuart Scott refers in his statement above, was the late coach and ESPN commentator Jimmy Valvano. But if you witnessed Stuart’s acceptance of the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPYs… through your tears… you witnessed what the man stood for – a demonstration of character, strength in the face of adversity, humility, honesty, and love. What you witnessed was heart; and it was beautiful.

Stuart is also battling cancer. And in his acceptance speech, he revealed how hard he is fighting – having undergone four surgeries in the days before due to complications with the disease. Such courage, wisdom and grace. Worthy of praise and so hard to put into words; but more than worthy of our attempt here.

Stuart is living V’s words: He will not give up…ever! Neither will his extended family (ESPN coworkers and execs, mom and dad siblings, girlfriend, daughters, other loved ones and friends); because, as he said, he cannot fight alone.

Watch the ultimate ESPN highlight; capped by the most beautiful moment of the night – when his youngest daughter, Sydni, walked on stage and gave Daddy the hug he needed.

(Crying again…dammit.)

President Obama Welcomes NBA Champion Miami Heat Back To The White House (Video)

“Welcome to the White House. Actually, for these guys, it’s welcome back to the White House.”
President Barack Obama

Very cool. If anyone knows how to celebrate even in the midst of hate, it’s our U.S. President. Oh, haters… Even you gotta celebrate these guys. The Miami Heat visited the White House for 2nd consecutive year. A two-time winner in his own right, watch President Obama’s full speech welcoming the champion basketballers back above.

Julius Erving aka ‘DR. J’ Says He Would Not Build An NBA Team Around Carmelo Anthony (Video)

NBA Hall Of Famer & former Philadelphia 76er Julius Erving stopped by ESPN2’s program ‘SPORTSNATION’ to talk basketball. When the topic of Carmelo Anthony & the NY Knicks came up, Dr. J didn’t pull any punches as to what’s wrong with the franchise.  I’ve said it many times before that “Dr. J” was Michael Jordan BEFORE ‘Air Jordan’ but ‘Dr. J’ didn’t always have the help he needed to win multiple championships. Michael Jordan is viewed by many people as the greatest to ever play the game, but it took Phil Jackson to convince him to slow down from being an aggressive scorer early in MJ’s career so that the Bulls could properly build around him. When asked if Carmelo Anthony is the right guy to build around in order for the Knicks to win one or more championships, Dr. J kept it honest that he didn’t have faith in Melo being the right guy.  I believe Lebron James is the greatest to ever play the game & he’s not even done yet, but the kid from Akron recognized early that he needed the proper pieces around him to solidify multiple championships in efforts to silence the critics & cement himself in the G.O.A.T. argument.

ESPN: Revis Island – The Darrelle Revis Story (Video)

ESPN’s E:60 takes on the life journey so far of one Darrelle Revis. “Revis Island – The Darrelle Revis Story” takes us from Revis’ small-town upbringing and career beginnings in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania… to entering the nearby University of Pittsburgh… to joining the NFL and playing for the New York Jets… to tearing his ACL… and to getting traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers… all in the short clip above. Of course, Darrelle’s story is still being written.

ESPN First Take: Master P States His Opinions On Jay Z Entering The Sports Agency Business (Video)

The first rapper to enter into the world of representing pro athletes was Master P. By now everyone should be familiar with the infamous deal that former NFL running back Ricky Williams signed with the New Orleans Saints that didn’t go over well in his favor. Master P stopped by ESPN’s First Take to speak with Stephen A. Smith & Skip Bayless to give his opinion on Jay Z’s entrance into the world of sports agency. Having dealt with the ups & downs of formerly running his no defunct NO LIMIT SPORTS agency, it was interesting to see Master P choose his words carefully without being negative or discouraging even though it feels like he’s saying it may not be the best move for a few parties involved.

ESPN First Take: Nelly Accurately Explains Why Dwight Howard Left The Los Angeles Lakers (Video)

St. Louis rapper Nelly appeared on ESPN’s First Take with Stephen A Smith & Skip Bayless hours ago & he was on point with his analysis of a few topics discussed on the show. I watched the show live & found Nelly to be spot on about his analysis of why Major League Baseball is falling off as well as why more African-Americans are not gravitating to the game. The most explosive debate occurred when the topic of discussion turned to the reason Dwight Howard left the Los Angeles Lakers. If you follow me on twitter then you will know that I’ve addressed the elephant in the room involving Kobe Bryant for a while now. Although I don’t have a national platform like ESPN to express my opinion, it was a pleasant surprise to see someone like Nelly not play the political correctness game that most of these journalists do by just being very direct about what’s REALLY going on. The bottom-line is that although most of these NBA players respect Kobe’s talent, a larger number of them do not want to play with Kobe. I’ve spoken with a number of NBA players who’ve said similar things off the record. Nelly was spot on with his analysis regarding Dwight Howard but with him actually being friends of the Houston Rockets’ new center I’m sure to a lesser degree he may have indirectly spoken for him.

ESPN’s Outside The Lines: Carry On (Trailer)

I watched this on ESPN Sunday afternoon and found it to be nothing short of inspiring. Wow.

The network initially profiled Dartanyon Crockett – legally blind, homeless and motherless – and his friend, Leroy Sutton, who was often found on Crockett’s back (the result of his losing his legs after being run over by a train when he was 11) four years ago. ESPN revisited and updated the touching story of the friendship and bond of these two young athletes today.

ESPN’s E:60 on Miami Heat All-Star Chris Bosh (Video)

You say what you want about Miami Heat All-Star Chris Bosh but this dude is hilarious with all the situations that seem to happen with him.  Self-inflicted suspect photobombs or not one thing for sure is you can’t deny the guy can play basketball.  This ESPN mini-documentary with Lisa Salters exposes Chris Bosh for who he really is…..just a geeky, nerdy, yet highly intelligent former Georgia Tech student who had an interest in engineering & computer programming. To Chris Bosh’s wife he’s just a “goofball” who in more ways than one is just an entertainer at heart. Despite some of the negativity he’s received it’s kinda cool to see Chris Bosh won’t allow anything to affect his sense of humor.

ESPN Short: JaMarcus Russell (Video)

ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi brings viewers JaMarcus Russell’s story: Mobile (Alabama, USA) high school football stand-out, All-SEC quarterback at Louisiana State University, Number 1 pick in the National Football League… then out of the League after three seasons. With the 2013 NFL Draft set to go down tomorrow & some NFL executives even claiming that this maybe the worst draft class in a decade, various stories past & present are surfacing of some of the biggest busts in NFL history. It’s no question that whenever people speak of the biggest busts in NFL history JaMarcus Russell’s name is one of the first that’s brought up. As a hardcore Oakland Raiders fan I was very disappointed in JaMarcus’s stint with my favorite NFL team, but I’m not knocking his attempts to make it back into the league although the odds are not in his favor.

Kendrick Lamar Performs on ESPN’s SportsNation (Video)

I was watching ESPN’s SportsNation hosted by Marcellus “DatDude” Wiley and Charissa Thompson as it aired live yesterday & their guests were 49ers starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick & Kendrick Lamar for SportsNation’s Madden Cover Vote kickoff special. When Kendrick was first introduced the music started to cue up for hit popular song “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe” I chuckled because I knew there was no way in hell ESPN would allow him to get away with that so of course he did the self-edits & segued into “Girl Don’t Kill My Vibe”. Fortunately for Kendrick the audience didn’t sing the REAL chorus to the song which would have drove ESPN’s censors mad. Kendrick also performed his hit record ‘Poetic Justice’ for the SportsNation audience as well so check out both videos above & below….

Common On ESPN’s First Take During NBA All-Star Weekend (Video)

I’m here in Houston, Texas for all of the NBA All-Star weekend activities & one of the primary things I didn’t want to miss was ESPN’s First Take doing a live taping on Friday morning in Houston. Needless to say, due to schedule conflicts, I didn’t make it in the building but it sure looked like fun as Common was the special guest on the show. In this special edition that aired live Common debated with Skip Bayless & Stephen A. Smith on everything from playing in the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game and those annoying arguments about who would win in a game of one-on-one between LeBron James or Michael Jordan.

ESPN Films 30 for 30 Shorts: The Unique Style & Fashion Of NBA Legend Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier (Video)

‘Clyde’ has been gliding smooth for decades! Now we know. Famed film director Nelson George spotlights Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier in the five-minute clip above. It touches on his on-court stylings with the New York Knicks back in the day then moves quickly from there to his being a style King of New York. Two things you gotta experience: the bumpy butter shoes in the beginning and the descriptive wordplay near the end.

Pete Rock On ESPN First Take (Video)

One of the top 3 hip hop producers of all-time, the legendary Pete Rock appeared on ESPN’s First Take this morning to debate the key sports stories of the day with Stephen A. Smith & Skip Bayless. When I heard Pete Rock was going to be on the show I knew I was gonna tune in to watch it, but I did have some reservations because over the years Pete Rock has never been a very vocal person even in hip hop related interviews. After watching the show this morning it did appear to be a little rough for Pete Rock as his relatively shy & laid back demeanor was indeed overshadowed by Stephen A. Smith & Skip Bayless who appeared to pick up the bulk of the debating. Check out the first segment above & more video from Pete Rock’s appearance on ESPN’s First Take below…..

Ed Lover On ESPN First Take (Video)

I watched the show this morning on ESPN First Take as Stephen A. Smith & Skip Bayless welcomed former radio & MTV personality Ed Lover on the show. Every Wednesday they invite a celebrity guest on the show to talk about any & everything in the world of sports. In this segment of the show they talked about the Manti Te’o fake girlfriend situation that’s been all in the media as of late. Personally, I don’t believe Manti Te’o’s story he’s been feeding to the media. I have come to my own conclusion & drawn my own theory of what really happened that I’ve mentioned at length on twitter, but I do believe it’s about time the media moves on with it. I laughed out loud at Ed Lover’s repeated use of the word “Swag” in this segment. I found that to be rather “corny”. More behind the scenes video after the jump below…

Big Boi Puts Faith In The Atlanta Falcons On ESPN’s First Take (Video)

It’s a huge playoff game for the Atlanta Falcons this weekend as they take on the red hot Seattle Seahawks.  As of right now the Atlanta Falcons are a 2-point favorite to beat the Seahawks, but in their last playoff game they only scored 2-points total versus the Green Bay Packers.  No wonder people unwilling to give that vote of confidence in the Atlanta Falcons winning their first playoff game ever. Big Boi stopped by ESPN’s First Take & chopped it up with Stephen A. Smith & Skip Bayless about Atlanta’s chances & believes they will do well if they stay out of the strip clubs before the big game.
