Major COOL!

Full disclosure: The cameraman/interviewer, going by the ‘Big O’ moniker, is NOT me. However, I am kind of envious of him. Get ready to geek out on these guys homage and futuristic reinterpretation approach to the story of the heirs of the World War II pilots, The Tuskegee Airmen.

The Kids Ask Royce Da 5’9, “What’s A Sidechick?” On Arts & Raps (Video)

You got a favorite pair of shoes? Well, a sidechick is like the other pair of shoes…that you leave by the door.
Royce Da 5’9

HA ha! Never heard it put that way, but excellent! This whole video is Royce on some real talk at the level the kids can understand; not watered down, just broken down. Interesting how a talk with the kids (DJ and Zay Zay) can cover such adult-oriented material. Clever. Worth the watch.

Art & Music: The “787 Graffiti Ball” Visually Captured By Atlanta’s ‘Hometown Heroes’ (Video)

One thing about Atlanta is the range of events that happen here.  Whether it is a Hip Hop Show, EDM or the Ballet & Symphony. Or it could be a Falcons, Hawks, Braves game or NASCAR event.  Besides those well known events you have cool niche events like BonFire ATL, Elevated ATL and 787 Graffiti Ball.  The 787 Graffiti Ball recently went down here in Atlanta at 787 Windsor St.  An event where the first 250 people who RSVP’d got a free spray can for the event.

What is Graffiti Ball ? Well it is a night dedicated to the art of Scribbling, Scratching, and Defacing.  Not only is it a chance for the everyday person to do some graffiti without having to look over their shoulders for cops.  Some of the biggest and emerging aerosol artists are brought together ranging from NYC, Miami, and of course here in Atlanta.  One of the well known ATL artists represented was DR. DAX whose amazing work can be seen all around Atlanta.  This video recap was shot by HomeTown Heroes make sure you check out their site hometownheroesatl.com

A New Superhero Comic With A New Point Of View: Raising Dion (Trailer)

Super dope! A comic taking another angle on the superhero saga. Sure, we have seen coming of age stories for superheroes (usually comic/TV/movie creators backtracking their characters’ stories for new content)… but what about Black superheroes (much fewer)… Black kid superheroes (what, like Cyborg off Teen Titans)… How about a widowed Black mom raising her kid, who happens to be gifted with super powers???

Imagine Superman, but from Martha Kent’s point of view. Or imagine Spiderman, but from Aunt May’s point of view. This is a superhero story, but from the parent’s point of view. But unlike her son, she doesn’t have any powers.

Sounds incredible, right? Can’t wait for the first issue, right? Well… GO! Get a FREE downloadable copy (or even better, you can BUY a physical copy to support the production) at www.raisingdion.com.

A3C Recruits “FRKO” & “Sean Fahie” To Bomb Atlanta With Art (Video)

Music Festivals are in full swing this Summer all across the country.  One of the best Music Festivals that begins in the Fall is the A3C Festival which takes place right here where we reside in Atlanta, GA!  People ask how A3C has grown so big with it only being ten years in existence? I would say one of the reasons is A3C does a good job of working with people in the Atlanta scene not just rappers but media & sites ( like Jayforce.com) but also visual artists.  The Atlanta Art scene is close knit and buzzing so I was excited when I saw that FRKO & Sean Fahie were helping to spread the word about A3C.  Watch as they go around the city with one of the founders of A3C creating original artwork on posters from Old 4th Ward to East Atlanta.  Save the date October 7th-11th A3C 2015 goes down and of course Jayforce.com & Beatz & Lyrics will be on the scene for sure! Video shot & edited by Marquise Adams.

Nelson Mandela’s Old Johannesburg Hideout Gives South African Artists & Entrepreneurs A New Home (Video)

Nice! Shout to The Daily Beast for bringing this Johannesburg gem to light. A center for entrepreneurship and culture that was once at the heart of the anti-apartheid movement. In South Africa, if you want to realize a dream, this is the place – apparently to work it or witness the work come to fruition. Great look at the people and art of Johannesburg in this clip.

The hostel reputed to be Nelson Mandela’s apartheid-era hideout is now the center of a network of cultural entrepreneurs who have helped revive the South African city.

Adventures With ArtByOdell : Los Trompos Exhibit at High Museum (Video)

Quite often I get asked why I go by the name of “ArtByOdell” it’s pretty simple really my name is Odell and I am an Artist.  Art is something I have been passionate about for years and the High Museum here in Atlanta, GA is one of my favorite places to visit.  So when they had an opening ceremony for their latest Los Trompos exhibit I had to go check it out and cover it for the site.  The term Los Trompos translates to Spinning Tops in Spanish and they are beautiful interactive pieces made with a special fabric that is very colorful and flexible.  The artists Hector Esrawe & Ignacio Cadena both hail from Mexico City worked together to bring us these beautiful creations.  They are featured in video along with my good friend DJ EU who provided the sounds for the day.  I even ran into the homie Blc Txt a local Hip Hop Artist here in Atlanta, GA.  The exhibit will run until November 29th 2015 it is located on the campus of the Woodruff Arts Center in the Silly Piazza right outside of the High Museum.  Be sure to check it out before it is over and be on the lookout for the next Adventure with ArtByOdell!

APB: “Artists Against Police Brutality” Comic Book (Artwork)

APB - artwork - JAYFORCE.COMA comic book titled APB: “Against Police Brutality” detailing Police Brutality is being put together by Rosarium Publishing.  Submissions for the project are still being submitted but Artist Ashley A. Woods has been released and it is a telling much needed piece.  The Artist/Illustrator hailing from Chicago created a touching memoriam piece that features Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Aiyana Stanley-Jones, Amadou Diallo, Cary Ball Jr, John Crawford, Miriam Carey, Rekia Boyd, Tanisha Anderson, and Yvette Smith.  Sadly all of these Black men and women were killed by Police officers and with all of the unrest going on in Baltimore this looks like something that will continue.

The 15 Project By ‘Fahamu Pecou’ at the ‘High Museum Of Art’ (Video)

Fahamu Pecou is an Artist, Scholar, Father, oh and he is also known as THE SHIT!  He recently had another edition of his Artist Live Talk Show The 15Project (Andy Warhol was famously quoted as saying “…in the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.”) The 15 Project facilitates that claim as an irreverent fusion of pop culture, fine art, sketch comedy, musical entertainment and much more.  The show was co hosted by Fabian Williams with DJ Kemit on the 1’s & 2’s and this went down at the renown High Museum.
