The Price We Pay: How Hiding Wealth Offshore Robs The People At Home (Video)

When it comes to sheltering the wealth of the super-rich, the United States is moving up the ranks. A new study says the U.S. is now the third most secretive country for offshore finances, trailing only Hong Kong and Switzerland. While recent U.S. laws force banks and other firms to disclose assets of American citizens, Washington has been criticized for failing to share that information with other countries.

Well, a new documentary tackles the issue of tax havens and their cost to the societies losing out on trillions of dollars in revenue. The film is called The Price We Pay. This is the trailer.

Kicked off by that intro and trailer, part 1 (above) of this episode of Democracy Now to explain how big business and the law of the land allows the USA and other countries to take money that should benefit its citizens and keep it. Some might call that theft (and yes, the tone you note in that last statement is sarcastic). Come on now, no one is saying that winners have to give back all their chips; but winners should play fair. Too bad the players (big business) and the rule-makers (law-makers) do not see things that way. Oh, and by the way, the U.S. is not ‘playing’ in a league of its own. Looking at you Switzerland, UK and others.

Individuals and small businesses pay taxes that fund the construction and repair of roads and bridges, that fund public services like firefighters and police… BUT big business entities – Google, Chase, and others – get access to these essential services without paying taxes on HUGE chunks of income. THAT IS NOT FAIR, player (even if it is legal).

The conversation continues in part 2 after the jump. Watch and go… damn. Link to this episode’s transcript follows.

Advice From A Self-Made Millionaire: Treat Money Like a Jealous Lover (And Nine More Tips) [Video]

Grant Cordone, millionaire. Wonder if he owns a mansion and a yacht. Ha! Maybe that Bugs Bunny joke was too ‘old’ to get a giggle if you are under 30; but what Cordone promises you can get… is rich! To do so, Cordone says you need to get greedy, get away from get-rich-quick schemes, never give up, and be a good guy (ethical, willing to help others to succeed). That’s the gist. Here are the tips, via an Entrepreneur magazine write-up (and video above):

  1. Follow the money. You cannot save your way to millionaire status. Focus on increasing your income in increments and repeating that.
  2. Don’t show off — show up! Be known for your work ethic, not the trinkets that you buy.
  3. Save to invest, don’t save to save. The only reason to save money is to invest it. Put your saved money into secured, sacred (untouchable) accounts. Never use these accounts for anything, not even an emergency.
  4. Avoid debt that doesn’t pay you. Make it a rule that you never use debt that won’t make you money. Poor people use debt to buy things that make rich people richer.
  5. Treat money like a jealous lover. Ignore it and it will ignore you, or worse, it will leave you for someone who makes it a priority.
  6. Money doesn’t sleep. Money doesn’t know about clocks, schedules or holidays, and you shouldn’t either. Never try to be the smartest or luckiest person — just make sure you outwork everyone.
  7. Poor makes no sense. Bill Gates has said, “If you’re born poor, it’s not your mistake. But if you die poor, it is your mistake.”
  8. Get a millionaire mentor. Most of us were brought up middle class or poor and then hold ourselves to the limits and ideas of that group. Get your own personal millionaire mentor and study them.
  9. Get your money to do the heavy lifting. Investing is the Holy Grail in becoming a millionaire and you should make more money off your investments than your work. Investing is the only reason to do the other steps.
  10. Shoot for $10 million, not $1 million. Go for more than a million. There is no shortage of money on this planet, only a shortage of people thinking big enough.

This episode of CBS’ 60 Minutes featured a piece on Darrelle Revis; why he is one of the most best cornerbacks in the NFL, his work ethic, how he lives and more. Interviewer Armen Keteyian guides viewers’ discovery of a monster shutdown defensive back on-field; but off-field, a humble New Jersey guy living above a restaurant (save those millions man) who enjoys art and plays drums in his spare time.

Great watch. Unless you’re one of the poor receivers that spends a Sunday on “Revis Island” I guess.

Paris Speaks On His History With Sway, Hip-Hop Then & Now And More (Video)

Make way for a Hip-Hop PANTHER… P-DogParis… arguably one of the most revered & feared (depending on what side of his commentary you fall). Above, a dude he has been down with since way back, Sway, is giving Paris the platform to speak his truth. And he will. Sway and Paris talk about the music and grind back in the day, views on government (USA), on the evolution of Hip-Hop and more.

Did you know Paris holds multiple college degrees? Did you know he did a bid in the ‘corporate’ world for a while? Did you know Paris’ “Pistol Politics” album is out now? At least one of those answers should be ‘yes’ off jump (link to album in earlier post below). Raise your score to 3 out of 3, and learn lots of bonus stuff, by watching the insight-filled interview above.

Hip-Hop… played a large part in raising my awareness… Contrary to what’s going on right now, the exception to the rule was foolishness, back in the day. And now the exception to the rule is anybody talking some sense.

Paris Speaks On His New “Pistol Politics” Album, Police Brutality And #BlackLivesMatter (Video)

I’m not really a proponent of “Hands Up, Don’t shoot.”
I’m on the “You Shoot, We Shoot” page.
Paris

The Black Panther of Hip-Hop. Whew, 25 years, and he is still talking armed revolution. Though his rhetoric is toned down just a touch, it is still that of a man on fire. He talks up the line up of guest appearances on his album (like Dead Prez, Chuck D and Kam) that spit righteous revolutionary fire on “Pistol Politics,” too. Apropos for these times of inadequate education, rampant poverty, police brutality and more afflictions affecting our community #BlackLivesMatter

Lovely Lupita Nyong’o Answers ’73 Questions’ (Video)

Wow… sometimes we need Eye Candy to touch our souls. You might think a rapid-fire interview of “73 questions” would either be not-so-engaging (at best) or annoying (more likely). But with classy lady Lupita … the answer is C – none of the above.

Lupita Nyong’o reveals a few of her (many) talents, from speaking Swahili and Spanish, to showing off her impressive hula hoop skills. The Oscar-winning actress also reflects on what it was like to move to Mexico at age 16 without her parents, how she learned to cry on demand, what life was like as a Hollywood production assistant, and what it took to bring her upcoming Star Wars character to life.

Isn’t she lovely? And just when you think the clip is all about inner beauty (which she definitely has)… BAM! She shows us she is wearing the very form-fitting yellow dress like WHOOOAAA! Watch and enjoy.

ESPN’s 30-For-30: Trojan War (Video)

Ah, college football fans. Let’s talk about the Pete CarrollUSC Era. He took over the program at the University Of Southern California after the 2000 season, and eventually restored the luster and swagger of the once-great Trojans with his football knowledge, upbeat personality and recruiting skills (and a couple of star graduates who’d come back to visit, if recollection serves).

Soon enough, Southern Cal was back! Topping the college football world in home field attendance; turning out win after win, multiple Heisman Trophy winners (e.g. Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush), marquee TV respect (ABC & Keith Jackson don’t just call any game)…

BUT…

There was sinning at the revival of USC. And the worst sin of all D-1 sins, THEY GOT CAUGHT! Lost scholarships, overturned victories, a returned Heisman award… oh my. All of the fall would come to light after the 2006 National Championship game. USC lost the Rose Bowl that year to The University of Texas. Then the proverbial bottom fell the f##k out!

The hurt ran deep and are really only numbing today. At least now we can really talk about it. Well, Coach Carroll, Heisman-winning quarterback Leinart and others can that is. Watch “Trojan War,” an ESPN 30-For-30 special, above.

The challenges or having expectations on his shoulder; they’d come anyway. He pushes hard to earn. A great song could make the worst singer a star.
