Jaden Smith x TA-KU – “BeastMode”
Jaden Smith continues to impress me with his music. It’s not just the lyrical wordplay & flow that’s impressing me with each single or project he releases, but often times its the type of soundscapes he chooses to use. One very important element to a good emcee is being able to choose the right beats to convey the mood of the song you’re trying to create. It was a pleasant surprise for me to see that the son of Will & Jada collaborated with very dope producer TA-KU who’s music & production I’ve been following for quite some time now. Peep this #BeastMode mix that Jaden & Ta-Ku put together & if you weren’t already impressed, this should definitely do it for you. Artwork via samuelburgessjohnson.com/

It looks like even Ludacris recognized this banger needed to be touched by him lyrically. Peep Chris Lova Lova’s freestyle over this ‘Lunch Money’ joint.

R&B/Soul: Jesse Boykins III – “Our Tonight is Mine” (Video)
A lot of R&B these days is non quality. Â I like my R&B singers to not sound like rappers and Jesse Boykins III is still making good R&B. Â The thing is you can have sensual lyrics without telling a lady “Pull your panties to the side & Drop it to the floor” , what you mostly hear on the radio these days. Well the track “Our Tonight is Mine” off Jesse’s Love Apparatus album talks to the ladies in a subtle but sexy way. Â The video features Jesse Boykins and Swedish model Amanda Looma while all of this takes place in the car in a parking garage. Â I know Jesse is happy with the director because he gets to kiss and feel on a hot swedish model while singing to her. Â Wait a minute just checked the credits video Written & Directed by Jesse Boykins III (Well played Jesse, well played) Parking Lot Loving!

Prodigy x Toro Y Moi – “Keep It Toro” (Cookin Soul Remix)
I couldn’t wait to play this joint on my radio show after I first heard it. Production duo ‘Cookin Soul’ does it again with this very ill remix of Prodigy’s classic Alchemist produced banger ‘Keep it Thoro’, but they flip it by melding the sounds from the Toro Y Moi joint ‘Day One’ off of his ‘Anything In Return’ album that dropped two year ago. This particular musical mashup is just toooooo dope. Y’all need to go on ahead & hit that download icon while you still can….
Classic Clips: Questlove Captures Recording Session With J Dilla, Common, & The Soulquarians (Video)
Check out this classic clip that Questlove of the legendary Roots crew unearthed recently in honor of J Dilla. It’s behind the scenes footage of the recording process for one of Common’s most talked about albums ‘Like Water For Chocolate.’ Crafting the soundscape for the project was J Dilla, James Poyser, & the rest of the Soulquarians who were recording it at the time. Check what Questlove had to say providing some interesting background history on the video, the process, & a few other little known facts…
“The Roots & Common were midway recording followup albums to their breakthrough Things Fall Apart & Like Water For Chocolate projects. two unapologetic “Neo Soul†joints. Having formed an unofficial collation sometime in 96, using the Native Tongue blueprint. The Soulquarians were born.
Behind-The-Beats with ‘Nottz’ (Video)
Virginia producer Nottz is one of my favorite beatsmith’s crafting quality hip hop music. Whenever I see a song produced by him I usually listen to it right away because I just KNOW it’s going to be some authentic hot ish! His track record dictates that urgency. Surprisingly most of the general public may not be aware of just how deep his catalog is & I’m sort of surprised more in the media haven’t done more interviews with him in the past. The people over at DrumBroker, Scratch Magazine, & RawKoncept got together for this ‘Behind The Beats’ series with the focus on the grossly underrated music producer. Check it out above….
R&B/Soul: Raheem DeVaughn – ‘Anytime Anyplace’ (Janet Jackson Cover)
