Black Jesus (Series Trailer)
Aaron McGruder Is BACK (officially as of August 7, 2014)! And he brought some of his homies from the “Boondocks” (like John ‘Grampa’ Witherspoon and Charlie ‘Ed Wuncler III‘ Murphy) over from his old Adult Swim gig/creation to his new venture – “Black Jesus.” No hate, but do you notice “Boondocks” losing some of it’s edge now that McGruder’s gone? Well, you’ll have absolutely NONE of that problem with his new new series. This show seems set to ‘go there’ even harder than the YouTube webisodes that were underground when “Boondocks” ruled Cartoon Network’s late night.
Get ready to feel The Spirit of the The Most High — Black Jesus — a new comedy from the creator of The Boondocks. Premieres Thursday, August 7th, at 11p ET on [adult swim].
All Vinyl Everything: DJ Jaycee’s Birthday Edition (July 2014) by @KoolKila
They rock your radios, festivals, weddings, and parties in the park and all types of venues after dark… and do we recognize them; esp. those at the heart of our life and art. We hope y’all do; because we do! Respect, Happy Birthday, and many happy returns to the homie DJ Jaycee. All Vinyl Everything (AVE) definitely recognized. Put the brother’s b-day in the event byline and made an event of it.
Traditionally, All Vinyl Everything is monthly event that has been showcasing DJs playing vinyl records in Atlanta, GA. Creators (and hosts) DJ Dibiase and Sean Falyon have presented the event for the past two years, FREE of charge to the public (that’s love). DJs each do a 30-minute set, playing whatever genre of music they desire (let ’em work). This one went down at Noni’s Bar & Deli, downtown.
The July party was a celebration for DJ Jaycee’s birthday, one of the very first DJs to help jump start AVE (that’s love shown). DJ Jaycee selected some of his veteran DJ friends to play, including DJ Applejac, DJ Big X, Supa Funkregulata Celo, DJ Babey Drew, DJ Wally Sparks, DJ Kerosene, DJ Ghost, and more. See the birthday boy focused above? He’s happy though, trust. A real DJ in his element at a worthwhile event. We have more spinners’ pics after the jump.
Hate you missed the festivities? Jaycee has another b-day coming. But no need to wait for that occasion to get down at an AVE. For upcoming events, follow All Vinyl Everything on the twitter account, @AllVinylATL. Be in the know and ready to go when you get info. Come out, support good music (Hip-Hop, R&B, and much more). Doing it for you.
(And this time, for DJ Jaycee!)

Dear White People (Trailer)
A satire about being a black face in a white place.
Very interesting treatise. We’ve seen vids and blog articles about ‘what we wished White folks knew knew about Black people’ subject matter; but this one apparently approaches it with enough hey-I-know-that-actor star power and I-have-always-wanted-to-say-that scripting to make a full-length movie. The trailer hints at a thoughtful production that does honor to Spike Lee’s ‘School Daze’ and ‘Do the Right Thing’ days, leans toward John Singleton’s ‘Higher Learning’ handling of social issues (examine societal interaction with campus as a backdrop), and has just enough Tyler Perry-esque-ness (more ‘Family That Preys’ than ‘Madea…’) in it to keep all strata of movie goers engaged.
Hey, they talk about Black hair… throw some Chris Rock movie-making influence in there, too.
In theaters October 17, 2014. Put it on your ‘to watch’ list. Starting with the trailer above.
SkyBlew – “StreetLIGHTS” (Prod. By Backdraft) [Video]
In this crazy vid peppered with cartoonery, there are a few angles not explored in a SkyBlew track before. Won’t spill ’em all, but Blew doesn’t smoke or drink… certainly not a criminal… So, why the liquor store robbery vignette right from the start? Now, on your second time watching (yes, there will be a second time), listen to what SkyBlew is saying as that vignette is playing. Worthwhile listening. Just as we said when we posted on the Backdraft-produced album “Journeys In 1st Person.” Visuals for “StreetLIGHTS” above. Enjoy.

Vivian Green – “Get Right Back To My Baby” (Prod. By Kwame)
Word to DJ Jaycee this is that HEAT! If your DJ isn’t spinning this already, let ’em know they’re late to the job! New music from Vivan Green called “Get Right Back To My Baby.” Produced by Kwame; you know, Bone Age blond black haired “Only You” rapping Kwame. On Facebook, Jaycee suggested blending this in after “Before I Let Go†by Maze featuring Frankie Beverly at your next party. Play the song. You’ll instantly understand.

John Oliver Slams America’s Slammers: The Prison System Is ‘Horribly Broken’ (Video)
Former member of the late night tongue-in-cheek commentative cabal over at Comedy Central (you know, folks like Jon Stewart and Jessica Williams of The Daily Show and Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report)… John Oliver has been loosed on the HBO audience; where he’s making even more biting wisecracks. Letting them have it!
Here’s yet another occasion to unleash the cracking Kraken – spotlighting America’s broken penal system.
On the episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver embedded above, the host spent about a third of his show’s run-time on how broken America’s prison system is. In essence, tearing some a-holes some new a-holes. Oliver dropped science and atomic bombs… America having more imprisoned than China, the rampant amount of prison rape, the abysmal medical care and maggots in the food (as contractors cut costs beyond the bone), folks copping pleas to avoid prison instead of defending themselves in court as is their legal right… all wrong, wrong, wrong!
Tie the tirade together with a Sesame Street styled clip; and you’ve got a winner. Realize though that in the midst of the joking, how disproportionate the number of people of color vs. Whites end up in the hell we call prison…and you’ll understand that the U.S. has got a loser… its prison system!
Classic Clips: 19-Year Old Kanye West Holding His Own In A Cypher Back In The Day at Fat Beats NYC (Video)

UPDATE: Kanye West, Al Tariq, Butter Lee & Black Attack @ Fat Beats Aug 96 (Extended Clip)
Alternative: Little Dragon – “Killing Me” (Chad Hugo Remix)
Neptunes is more than Pharrell Williams. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves. Sometimes his partner Chad Hugo reminds us… with a dope dolo demo of production skill. A little electro-funk remix of Little Dragon’s “Killing Me” should do it. Check it out!
(More after the jump.)
Alternative: SZA x Jill Scott – “Divinity” (Prod. By Om’Mas Keith)
Sticks and stones might break my heart tonight…
Ache and vulnerability. Imagine a deep stretch to relieve a deeper pain. Click play and it’ll be like you’re sitting next to producer Om’Mas Keith as he’s listening to TDE’s SZA and Jill Scott vibe over his creation. Some Sunday alt/soul zen for you to enjoy. Don’t know if that’s what they were going for; but the overall experience could be called “Divinity.”
The Metal Workers At ‘Man at Arms’ Create The Ultimate Fantasy Combo Weapon (Video)
Marvel meets DC. Batman’s Bat-a-rang meets Wolverine’s claws. Man At Arms (ah, who’s a He-Man fan? haha) is bringing the two weapons together in the best sickest way in the shop. Watch! Oh…and bad guys…RUN!
Raekwon – “Ooh La La La”
That airy track is almost singing “Ooh La La La” on it’s own… but then Teena Marie takes it over. Listen closely. This is the latest Throwback Thursday track from the Wu chef Raekwon… another flip of some classic R&B; approaching the Teena track with them words!
Total Slaughter: Bright Lights (Documentary) [Video]
The ‘Total Slaughter’ rhyme battle headliners fought through a worthy field of lyrical combatants to get to The Garden (aka Madison Square Garden, NYC, USA) on July 12, 2014. This is the documentary about the build-up, triumphs and let-downs (for those eliminated mainly) along the way to the main event. Check it out.
Bright Lights is an inside look at the preparations and mental states of Joe Budden, Hollow da Don, Murda Mook, and Loaded Lux as they all grind towards their ultimate showdown.
The finalists, Joe Budden and Hollow da Don, ultimately went at it! What happened? If you don’t know, hit the jump and watch some more…
Magnif – “The Shining Pt. 2” (Produced By J Dilla)
Detroit MC/Producer Magnif drops “The Shining Pt. 2†(produced by J Dilla) a leak off his forthcoming debut solo project, “MagnifIAm.” Ten years ago, “The Shining Pt. 1†was released as a 12†single; with Dilla on the beat and the scratches. Cuts by DJ TJ the King on this one (the beat from the late great J).
ESPN Highlights: Drake Hosts The 2014 ESPYs (Video)
Hey, Stuart Scott’s award acceptance was definitely the most beautiful moment of the night of the ESPYs. But like it or love it, Drake, as host, hit all the marks (and “Side Pieces” … hilarious) and kept the show lively and moving.
That ‘Lance blow’ though… (a W-T-F moment to be certain)! Enjoy the clip above, with lots after the jump. If you have half as much fun as Drake seemed to be having, you’ll be doing good.
ESPYs Special Moment: Sports Anchor Stuart Scott Accepts The 2014 Jimmy V Award And A Hug From His Baby Girl (Video)
I’m not special. I just listened to what the man said.
– Stuart Scott
The man, to whom ESPN anchor Stuart Scott refers in his statement above, was the late coach and ESPN commentator Jimmy Valvano. But if you witnessed Stuart’s acceptance of the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPYs… through your tears… you witnessed what the man stood for – a demonstration of character, strength in the face of adversity, humility, honesty, and love. What you witnessed was heart; and it was beautiful.
Stuart is also battling cancer. And in his acceptance speech, he revealed how hard he is fighting – having undergone four surgeries in the days before due to complications with the disease. Such courage, wisdom and grace. Worthy of praise and so hard to put into words; but more than worthy of our attempt here.
Stuart is living V’s words: He will not give up…ever! Neither will his extended family (ESPN coworkers and execs, mom and dad siblings, girlfriend, daughters, other loved ones and friends); because, as he said, he cannot fight alone.
Watch the ultimate ESPN highlight; capped by the most beautiful moment of the night – when his youngest daughter, Sydni, walked on stage and gave Daddy the hug he needed.
(Crying again…dammit.)

Behind The Scenes: Nas – “Represent” (Video)
There’s a YouTube studios? Hmm. Well, what’s really cool is the dopeness that’s about to come out of there. Apparently, they reviewed more than eighty finalists’ video treatments to pick one worthy director’s entry…to do a video for the single off Nas’ “Illmatic” entitled “Represent.” It’s been 20 years, but rather than dwell on what took so long, join us in anticipating how this is so right for Hip-Hop. Check out the behind-the-scenes vid above. And you can pick up Nas’ “Illmatic XX” via the link below.
