Killer Mike Speaks On How Buying Black Benefits Society As A Whole (Video)

Mike calls Vlad a friend and vice versa. Wonder if he considers Vlad an ‘ally’ like his RTJ homie El-P. Gotta watch “Trigger Warning” to really get the fullness of the difference, but an ‘ally’ is down for the cause; way past friendship.

Killer Mike spoke to VladTV about working for ten years to get his new show “Trigger Warning” picked up before Netflix came along. He explained that FX was originally interested and allowed them to use the footage that they filmed for a demo roll to shop to other networks. During the conversation, Killer Mike spoke about the first episode, where he lived within a Black-owned economy for 60 hours, which he offered as a challenge to viewers. To hear more, including Killer Mike’s thoughts on why it should be easier to live in a Black economy.

Gangsters In Paradise (Documentary)

My dad was God… at least to me…and since I could not fight God, I’d fight everybody else.

Damn. That is the definition of f’d up AND a damn near perfect description of the condition that sets a gangster on his path in life. Wow. Another in-depth hard-hitting VICE doc, covering content you just won’t get anywhere else.

In Gangsters in Paradise – Deportees of Tonga, VICE embeds with four Tongan nationals who have been sent back to the tiny island nation where they were born after serving prison time in New Zealand and the United States. Former gang members, they often struggle to reconnect with the culture, the language, and the people.
– VICE

Interesting when you realize that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is half Tongan and half Black. He could have been all f’d up in the game. He still probably would feel some pain watching this. As should we all.

Comedian Godfrey Speaks On Terry Crews’ Social Media Battles & Black Women Constantly Being Disrespected (Video)

Reiterating the point DL made, Vlad hipped Godfrey to how Terry’s threat [to slap D.L. over year-old commentary on his being harassed & inappropriately touched by another male] might be a move to deflect some of the heat he has been getting for defending Gina Rodriguez’s character in light of comments she made that offended many Black women.

Terry Crews offering to slap DL Hughley, Godfrey stopped by VladTV again, and this time around he shared his thoughts on Terry Crews addressing “toxic masculinity,” where he called out D.L. Hughley for telling DJ Vlad that God gave him muscles for a reason when he was assaulted. Godfrey admitted that Terry seemed a little hypocritical for saying he should slap D.L. amid the argument. During the conversation, Godfrey also reacted to Terry defending actress Gina Rodriguez when she was accused of making statements to belittle Black women, which he later apologized for.
DJ Vlad

‘Offering to slap D.L.…’ Kind of hilarious worded that way. Excuse me, but might you like to have the sh!t slapped out of you, Mr. Hughley? Haha!

Crank Lucas – “If 21 Savage Was Actually British” (2019) [Video]

So 21 Savage was born a Brit, mate? Who knew?

Well, I’m sure plenty of fans knew. I’m just saying, back in the day Slick Rick rapped with a British-type accent to clue us in sort of. Nothing from Savage on that front… until now. Good luck to the young brother with his current immigration travails. No need to keep this Crank Lucas gem about it on ice though. Let this hilarity breathe, bloke!

Gabrielle Union & Jessica Alba Are “L.A.’s Finest” (Series Trailer)

Interesting that this will be on Charter, a cable platform. Word on the Interwebs is that the pilot for this “Bad Boys” spinoff-for-TV series was passed on by NBC (which is owned by Comcast, a huge Charter competitor) first. Let’s see if ‘little bank’ can take from ‘big bank’ on this occasion.

Looks like a dope trailer, setting up ‘Syd’ (Gabrielle Union reprising her role as Martin Lawrence’s character’s sister from “Bad Boys II”) as the centerpiece for some good storytelling on the small screen.

From the universe of the Jerry Bruckheimer/Michael Bay “Bad Boys” franchise, “L.A.’s Finest” follows Syd Burnett (Gabrielle Union), last seen in Miami taking down a drug cartel, who has seemingly left her complicated past behind to become an LAPD detective. Paired with a new partner, Nancy McKenna (Jessica Alba), a working mom with an equally complex history, Syd is forced to confront how her unapologetic lifestyle may be masking a greater personal secret. Taking on the most dangerous criminals in Los Angeles while skirting the rules, and speed limits, Syd and Nancy become a force to be reckoned with – on the streets, and in each other’s lives.

The first three installments in the 13-episode series will be exclusively available to Spectrum video subscribers free On Demand (and without ads) on May 13, after which new episodes will release every Monday until the finale.

Debuting in 2019, Spectrum Originals is a premier destination for premium original series available exclusively to Spectrum video subscribers on-demand and ad-free. This free service will launch with the Sony and Bruckheimer-produced drama “L.A.’s Finest,” starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba. An initiative of Charter Communications, Spectrum Originals is the latest expansion of Charter’s market-leading video offerings, which include regional sports networks and its award-winning Spectrum News services. More information on Spectrum Originals can be found at www.spectrumoriginals.com/lasfinest.

Kevin Hart & Baker Mayfield Talk Off-Field In A ‘Cold As Balls’ Ice Bath (Video)

‘BM’… ‘Bowel Movement’… ’cause you the sh!t…

Okay, Kevin. Leave the nickname game to someone else. Baker will not be going with ‘BM’ for now (or ever). Watch him tell his story, and get to take a ‘BM’ on Texas Tech for blocking his transfer in the college days. Haha!

Football star Baker Mayfield steps into the #ColdAsBalls tub! He tells Kevin Hart about his rise to football superstardom, winning the Heisman trophy and getting drafted by the Cleveland Browns.

Ah ha! So bringing Sleepy Brown out with him for the Super Bowl halftime show feature has a bit more ‘makes sense’ to it for you now, huh? Three Generations Of “Shaft” Are About To Hit The Streets? You Damn Right (Trailer)

Oh man hell yeah! This is gonna be dope. Different angle going heavy on the ‘non-cool’ “Shaft” descendant ‘JJ’ (John Shaft, Jr.) in this chapter. Looks like they kept the Black super-cool street justice vibe and amped the comedy. And kept the sexy… Wow! The sistas in this one (Regina Hall, too… nice look, even as a bitter babymama, ha!). Check out the trailer.

JJ, aka John Shaft Jr. (Jessie T. Usher), may be a cybersecurity expert with a degree from MIT, but to uncover the truth behind his best friend’s untimely death, he needs an education only his dad can provide. Absent throughout JJ’s youth, the legendary locked-and-loaded John Shaft (Samuel L. Jackson) agrees to help his progeny navigate Harlem’s heroin-infested underbelly. And while JJ’s own FBI analyst’s badge may clash with his dad’s trademark leather duster, there’s no denying family. Besides, Shaft’s got an agenda of his own, and a score to settle that’s professional and personal.
– Warner Bros. Pictures

And you see ‘Double R’ (Richard Roundtree) is still right in there with the sh!ts, too!

Throwback/History: Nikki Giovanni Interviews James Baldwin (November 1971) [Video]

The world does it to you long enough and effectively enough… You begin to do it to yourself. You become a collaborator, an accomplice of your own murderers…

Just reading the title, you must know that the convo here is about to get deep-deep-DEEPER in depth. Even the context of this clip is deep. Nikki Giovanni, at this point in her life, is interviewing an idol of hers (James Baldwin). And before the talk really gets started, her idol declares that he is PROUD of her… that he needs and depends on her.

If only we strived to live to make our forerunners proud; for them to be able to truly pass the baton to us and trust that the race will continue to be well run… WHEW!! #Chills #NoChill #BlackHistoryMonth

Original video from SOUL! and then shoutfactorytv. All rights and love to Soul! and shoutfactorytv for broadcasting this. Taped in London, November 1971.

Yolande Cornelia “Nikki” Giovanni, Jr. (born June 7, 1943) is an American poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator. Giovanni gained initial fame in the late 1960s as one of the foremost authors of the Black Arts Movement. Influenced by the Civil Rights Movement and Black Power Movement of the period, her early work provides a strong, militant African-American perspective, leading one writer to dub her the “Poet of the Black Revolution.”

James Arthur Baldwin (August 2, 1924 – December 1, 1987) was an American novelist and social critic. His essays, as collected in Notes of a Native Son (1955), explore intricacies of racial, sexual, and class distinctions in Western societies, most notably in mid-20th-century America. Some of Baldwin’s essays are book-length, including The Fire Next Time (1963), No Name in the Street (1972), and The Devil Finds Work (1976). An unfinished manuscript, Remember This House, was expanded and adapted for cinema as the Academy Award-nominated documentary film I Am Not Your Negro.

Baldwin’s novels and plays fictionalize fundamental personal questions and dilemmas amid complex social and psychological pressures thwarting the equitable integration of not only African Americans, but also gay and bisexual men, while depicting some internalized obstacles to such individuals’ quests for acceptance. Such dynamics are prominent in Baldwin’s second novel, Giovanni’s Room, written in 1956, well before the gay liberation movement.

Soul! or SOUL! (1967–1971 or 1967–1973) was a pioneering performance/variety television program in the late 1960s and early 1970s produced by New York City PBS affiliate, WNET. It showcased African American music, dance, and literature.

Ellis Haizlip was born on September 17, 1929 (to January 25, 1991). He was a pioneering broadcaster, television host, theater and television producer, and cultural activist. Often host of Soul!

Rhythm Roulette With Maaly Raw (Video)

Maaly scored huge with so many source sounds to pick from as a result of his blindfolded wax pull. Albums though? I’m not mad, because he definitely made use of his gift given the gift of all those tracks to work with to make this beat. Really digging that last beat he made.

“I can kinda hear anyone rapping on this one right here.”

Maaly Raw tried his hand at Mass Appeal’s famed #RhythmRoulette challenge. After strolling through New York City’s Good Records and selecting three albums at random, the Philly trap producer behind Lil Uzi Vert’s “Do What I Want” chops up a few beats on the spot. Utilizing the soundtrack to 1983’s ‘The Big Chill,’ John Cougar Mellencamp’s ‘Scarecrow,’ and Oscar Peterson’s ‘Put On A Happy Face’ the young producer locks in and delivers three unique beats.
