David Banner Talks About Taking Hip-Hop To The Next Level, Making “My Uzi” And More (Video)

If we don’t do something… Hip-Hop is not gonna be ours anymore… It is up to us… We gotta push Hip-Hop to another level… The White boys are getting more and more lyrical, and we’re basically mumbling.
David Banner

Man that Banner: Always an interesting interview. He talks about Hip-Hop, its slipping from the grasp of Black people as originators (as did Rock and as R&B is about to), about “My Uzi” (featuring Big K.R.I.T.), about the almost-done album “The God Box,” and more.

POWERFUL interview. Please watch attentively. Share enthusiastically. Enjoy and be enriched!

Grammy Winner D’Angelo Talks With Tavis Smiley About “Black Messiah” And More (Video)

Come to think of it: Was there ‘Neo-Soul’ music before D’Angelo? Not much, if any. He was a founding father of the genre, so to speak. From the son of a Baptist preacher, heavily influenced by church music, to making that funky stuff that grew from steeping in all that Stevie Wonder, George Clinton, James Brown, and Prince growing up. Then he got ‘extra-grown’ for the ladies with that “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” song and video. That earned him a Grammy (Best Male R&B Vocal Performance).

And then…nothing…for like over 10 years.

Now D’Angelo is back with his latest project, “Black Messiah.” And here he is talking to Tavis about it and more. Hey, it took two episodes to convey the convo. Keep watching after the jump.

Dee Barnes Speaks On Being Assaulted By Dr. Dre Back In The Day & Her Place In Hip Hop History (Video)

Kevin Powell interviews Hip-Hop journalist Dee Barnes for HuffPost. That’s right, the story of the woman Dr. Dre attacked back in the day… the story that was missing from the N.W.A. biopic (“Straight Outta Compton”). Many heads have called the omission of this dark moment from the historic Hip-Hop story’s retelling foul. Well, watch and get Dee’s point of view.

Note: This interview is not all about the Dre assault incident. Kevin is allowing Dee to have her say, and then the story comes out. Watch. Very deep. There are still unhealed wounds to this day.

Y’all done messed up now. Giving Stephen Colbert a ‘bump’ to a bigger media platform – from Comedy Central to CBS – allows him to do what he does, increased by an order of magnitude. Political satire on 10? Nah, on 100! And he’s just getting started. Above: Check him out lampooning the 2016 field of U.S Presidential candidates. “Feel the Bern” (candidate Bernie Sanders) for real. And dare you not to chuckle at the Republican candidates…

…Oh, you already were? Well, this’ll chuck some chuckles into the laugh fest.

Hit the jump for more hilarity; and Colbert spending some silly time with actress Lupita Nyong’O. Pioneer Supermodel Beverly Johnson Talks About Being Drugged By Bill Cosby, A One Night Stand With Mike Tyson And More (Video)

Okay, she is there because she is promoting a book. But c’mon son… you KNOW Sway would ask about what she said about The Coz and the druggings (being that Beverly Johnson was one of the first to affirm that Bill was dropping ’em with the drinks… allegedly). And the book is chock full of ‘Scandal’ level messiness besides that – rivalries between models, messing with that ‘white girl’ (e.g. cocaine), Mike Tyson… Verrrry interesting.

From being the first Black model on the cover of Vogue to building an international empire, the lovely Beverly Johnson stopped by Sway in the Morning to talk about her new book, The Face That Changed it All: A Memoir.

AUTOGRAPHED BOOK: BEVERLY JOHNSON – THE FACE THAT CHANGED IT ALL: A MEMOIR

Ice Cube x O’Shea Jackson Jr.: Father And Son Talk About Son Playing His Father On Screen (Video)

Cube couldn’t see ANYONE other than his son, O’Shea Jackson, Jr., play him in the new N.W.A. biopic, “Straight Outta Compton.” And Jr. came to realize that if he didn’t, he was risking another actor messing up his father’s story on the big screen. Locked! In this Back-And-Forth discussion, father and son Cube discuss how their emotions really came to bear in the movie-making process and more. Great watch!

(See how at the end Jr. is hinting at taking on other roles already? Yeah, he’s got the bug!)

Talib Kweli And Bill Maher Discuss #BlackLivesMatter Protesters Interrupting Bernie Sanders’ Presidential Campaign Speech (Video)

Bill Maher: Why Bernie Sanders? …If you’re gonna interrupt somebody… This guy had a hundred percent approval rating from the NAACP.
Talib Kweli: NAACP liked Donald Sterling, too.

And folks, that’s how we dig into a real conversation! Watch the video clip above and gain some perspective.

A while back, #BlackLivesMatter shut down a speech appearance by 2016 Presidential hopeful and leading American Progressive Bernie Sanders. Many disagreed with the women who took the mic. But EVERYONE paid attention, talked about it, talked about #BlackLivesMatter from many angles. Whether you ultimately agree or disagree with the tactic, Kweli does make a couple of solid points. The first, the duty of activist-protesters is to disrupt and gain the platform (which #BlackLivesMatter did LITERALLY). The second, NO candidate should take the Black vote for granted in 2016.

Very interesting. Do you agree with Kweli? Discuss…

Scarface Keeps It Real About Hip-Hop, Reminisces About Eazy-E & N.W.A. Back In The Day And More (Video)

Sometimes it takes seeing it through the eyes of an O.G. who you thought had seen it all… to get back your appreciation of it. Right off the bat, Scarface is making a big deal about his latest NY trip. The Power 105 Breakfast Club presses him to describe the ‘what’ that had him excited: It was Hip-Hop, NYC and Hip-Hop in NYC! Truth was, until this latest August trip he had not seen a real ‘jam in the park’ – no superstars, no ‘turn up’ – just the people jamming to Hip-Hop in the park. And he comes to New York a lot… Hell, he’s been to the Apple enough to know how to catch the train…

And yet, we NEVER get tired of Uncle Face’s interviews. Check this one out: Talking about being himself and staying himself (Scarface, Brad Jordan, no turn up; but no disrespect to the youth who do) this time out; talking about how he is in no hurry to see ‘Straight Outta Compton’ (because he was there when everything they are talking about happened); what’s going on with Geto Boys and their last tour and more.

Brother Ali and A Class Of Denver 5th Graders ‘Hang Out’ To Learn From Each Other (Video)

This is so dope!!! Part of what we love to do here is bring you coolness that just does not get to see the light of day elsewhere…but should.

5th Grade Students from Denver, CO interview Brother Ali to discuss names and their importance to the individual.
Paul Clifton

This Google Hangout interview features Mr. Clifton’s students asking questions to guide informative discussion that enriched the speaker and the audience. Ali thanked the kids for teaching him as he was signing off. In the beginning Ali was asked, “What kind of person are you?”

Ali answered, “Well, I try to be a good person… [v]ery connected to The Creator, to myself, and to my heart and other people, and to my community.”

(Note that he did NOT reply ‘the dopest emcee’ – or anything me-me-ME centered – Brother Ali showed up and showed respect and love to those children and they showed it right back. Hip-Hop is the culture. Ali is an example of how we’d love those in the Nation to live – reaching, teaching, uplifting youth… partnering with others (i.e. Mr. Clifton)… giving of self and offering to do it again and again when called up… with a spirit of thankfulness.)

In a word: DOPE!

Scarface Speaking On Being ‘Deeply Rooted’ In Independent Music, His Best Album Ever And More (Video)

Scarface is definitely a citizen of The Universe… and a recent guest on Sway in the Morning. Good candid convo, as we have come to expect from BrotherMob’s interviews. Dropping “Deeply Rooted” on September 4, 2015, the talk around the web will likely be, at least in part, on how the work is guaranteed to be ‘real’ or ‘less commercial.’ Again, isn’t that also what we have come to expect from Uncle Face. He’ll touch on that aspect above as he speaks on ‘the best work he has ever done.’

Big talk… But real talk. Along with him admitting imitation-flattery of Chuck D’s style (and to being a crazy FANatic when it comes to PE’s “Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos”), likening his Geto Boyz to N.W.A. (maybe even a movie coming of it, similarly. Hmmmm). All that and so much more in the interview above.
