Interview
Free State Of Jones (Trailer)
Should be really dope. I remember author Sally Jenkins’ appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart years ago… talking about “The State Of Jones” book (see that here). Great story. The trailer above teases a movie that seems like it will do the story justice.
Written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross (THE HUNGER GAMES, SEABISCUIT, PLEASANTVILLE), and starring Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey. FREE STATE OF JONES is an epic action-drama set during the Civil War, and tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy.
Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones.
Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War.
In Theaters June 24, 2016.

Nas Is Coming: A 12th Studio Album, Work On Ghostbusters And More (Video)
In his own words, he’got a lot on the table right now. Shout of mad respect to the G-O-D-M-C Nassir Jones. Streets been watching, with so much pride and admiration. Nas is the business! See him above talking about the biz he is handling (and all kinds of scoops).
It’s been about four years since Nas blessed the world with his last full-length album, Life Is Good. Despite this hiatus, he hasn’t stopped making music and developing new partnerships. The Queens rapper was recently featured on remixes with The Weeknd, Future, French Montana, and Kanye West, and this week he caught up with Complex News in Los Angeles to discuss his new collaboration for the Ghostbusters movie.
The Rich Kids Of Instagram (Cutting The Edge) [Documentary]
Pictures speak like a thousand words…
Hear what this moving picture is saying. Richie Rich kids putting it all into the lens. A trip to Fiji – just because you’re bored – is rich! And these kids are that bodacious, audacious, in-your-face rich. And they want to share… on Instagram… suckers! Watch and ache with hate, or ‘aw wow’ with amazement (or a little of both, most likely).
Interesting documentary.
Education: Ronald Nelson Chose To Attend The University Of Alabama… Over EVERY Ivy League School (Video)
This hits, and hits ME, hard!
I was once a high school senior with eyes on an Ivy League acceptance prize. I was this close…THIIIISSS (like three out of seven admission board votes) close to getting in, too. However, I fell way below Merit-Based financial aid thresholds; and with out-of-state fees, had I been accepted to Cornell University, I might have been even further in college debt than I am now.
(Spoiler Alert: I’m DEEP in that debt sh!t, yo. So deep that my poor Tuskegee, Alabama accent just went BK NY. Even though I’m 4-6 ’til the deep-six… son! And before you ask, homie, hometown Tuskegee University’s fees got higher than folks on the best Cali Bud just when I was ready to apply there. I definitely would’ve got gaffled with that debt, homie… Oh no, my accent just went ’90s West Coast Hip-Hop… poorly. Haaaaaa!)
But I did not get accepted to the one Ivy League college I pursued, unlike Ronald Nelson – an incoming Freshman to The Capstone (aka The University Of Alabama). Ronald, wise beyond his years, has made a bold decision to turn down offers (and aid) from EVERY Ivy League school that accepted him (ALL of them), and several other colleges, to attend UA.
Ronald did the math, and he kept the faith about his post-graduate future which will be rife with so many options.
“With people being in debt for years and years, it wasn’t a burden that Ronald wanted to take on and it wasn’t a burden that we wanted to deal with for a number of years after undergraduate,” Ronald Sr. said. “We can put that money away and spend it on his medical school, or any other graduate school.”
Plus, though I do not know Ronald’s overall ‘tude at his current age, I would have been SUCH an Ivy League azz-jack. I believe I am a better person for going Crimson Tide (UA) instead of Big Red (Cornell). An Ivy League a-hole in the hole financially. And noooo, going Ivy League does not make folks ‘holes (ex: our hella cool U.S. President went to Harvard)… I am just talking about me.
And to Ronald, who I praise for exhibiting such wisdom at such an early age: Bravo, sir… and ROLL TIDE!

Comedian Louis CK Puts White Privilege In Perspective (Video)
3 brilliant minutes from Louis CK on white privilege. Wrapping ugly truths is comedy is a gift.https://t.co/bND8oBTMN4
— Shaun King (@ShaunKing) May 20, 2016
Preach!
This is dope. Okay, if you are not already, get into the comedy of Louis CK. He goes HARD with his brand of social commentary; not so serious that you will not get in a gut-busting chuckle, but you definitely get the point. And he does not just save it for the stage. Here he is giving it to Jay Leno and his audience a while back. White privilege is real; too real.
And anyone who says America’s history of slavery is way in the country’s rearview, f#ck you! See? Too strong, Gotta mix that sh!t in with some comedy, like Louis does. Watch.
(Shout out to Shaun King for the Twitter chatter that matters.)

Kanye Keeps It Real With Ellen (Video)
Kanye West went School Of Life professor on Ellen’s audience. Teach! As much as clips show up across the ‘webs of Yeezy going loose cannon, from Kanye’s canon (delivered in clips like this) folks could really learn to live life with passion. Passion that he speaks AND demonstrates…
I care about people. I care about… My Dad lived in homeless shelters less than five years ago… to find out he’s a psych major. My Mom was the first Black female chair of the English Department of Chicago State University. I was raised to do something; to make a difference!
– Kanye West
Check out a clip of Kanye’s sit-down with Ellen. More after the jump.
The Kids Ask Royce Da 5’9, “What’s A Sidechick?†On Arts & Raps (Video)
You got a favorite pair of shoes? Well, a sidechick is like the other pair of shoes…that you leave by the door.
– Royce Da 5’9
HA ha! Never heard it put that way, but excellent! This whole video is Royce on some real talk at the level the kids can understand; not watered down, just broken down. Interesting how a talk with the kids (DJ and Zay Zay) can cover such adult-oriented material. Clever. Worth the watch.
John Lewis: Bad Ass Vegan (Exclusive Interview)
A favorite phrase that I love is Health is Wealth something I state quite regularly. Sometimes when the conversation starts to get organic people start to check out. Alkaline water, Vegan food, juicing that’s not Hip Hop or is it? Rappers and liquor companies have partnered for decades Sprite and Taco Bell have used Hip Hop in campaigns also. Times are changing, some artists are promoting exercise and nutrition rather than beers & popping pills. I had the pleasure of speaking with John Lewis better known as BadAss Vegan about Nutrition and business. We also discuss his new partnership with Styles P of the Lox regarding his Vegan Smart product. John is not your typical Vegan so this is not your typical interview. He provides tips on how you can transition into the Vegan lifestyle. Before you ask trust me John knows your struggle he is not some hippie that grew up on nuts and berries. Rather someone who grew up in Ferguson/St. Louis an area known for their Beer & BBQ. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi so he knows about college campus eating habits as well. We cover it all and he also provides encouragement about taking that entrepreneurial leap. So now get ready to learn what it takes to be a BadAss Vegan!
